For this masterclass, we’ll be drawing inspiration from the David Bowie cardigan from Dries Van Noten’s Autumn/Winter 2011–2012 menswear collection. This cardigan is based on a men’s military cardigan embellished with gold embroidery. Characteristic of the design are the stylised, raised leaf motifs, worked in gold-coloured metal thread and cannetilles.

During the masterclass, you’ll get to work using the same techniques yourself. You’ll learn how to raise embroidery and how to embroider with cannetilles. After this masterclass, you can choose to finish the embroidery as a brooch or appliqué it onto, for example, a garment or bag of your own.

Kenny Damian is a textile restorer and freelance embroiderer. She has studied various hand embroidery techniques such as aari embroidery, Kutch (India) embroidery, gold and bead embroidery and needlepoint lace. She has learned these techniques and skills directly from embroiderers and through classes at home and abroad. She applies the techniques individually or in combination, and in both contemporary and historic designs.

Because I find it important not only to preserve the objects, but also not to lose the knowledge and the different techniques in which they were made, I started to learn different embroidery techniques.
