This masterclass draws inspiration from the exhibition GIRLS. On Boredom, Rebellion and Being In-Between, where you will find several objects featuring smocking. Smocking is an ancient sewing technique in which fabric is gathered and secured with decorative stitches. The resulting pleats can be either elastic or non-elastic, depending on the method chosen. This form of embroidery on gathered fabric was widespread in the 15th century and can be found throughout Europe.

During this masterclass, we will look at some beautiful examples from the study collection and you will learn the basics of various smocking techniques. Afterwards, you will not only have knowledge of the rich history of smocking, but also practical skills to apply this special technique yourself in your own projects.

Kenny Damian is a textile restorer and freelance embroiderer. She has studied various hand embroidery techniques such as aari embroidery, Kutch (India) embroidery, gold and bead embroidery and needlepoint lace. She has learned these techniques and skills directly from embroiderers and through classes at home and abroad. She applies the techniques individually or in combination, and in both contemporary and historic designs.

Because I find it important not only to preserve the objects, but also not to lose the knowledge and the different techniques in which they were made, I started to learn different embroidery techniques.
