Following the audiovisual installation RESOLUCIÓN: On lifetime decisions in Spanish cinema, De Cinema and EUROPALIA present a film cycle of the same name, featuring seven remarkable films from Spain, the guest country of EUROPALIA 2025. Each film revolves around a single colour. Each colour reveals something about womanhood and the era in which the film was made. Yellow touches on themes such as childhood, trauma and memory. It can evoke both warmth and innocence, as well as a disturbing atmosphere, often linked to deeply rooted experiences.

La madriguera (1962, Carlos Saura)

Teresa and Pedro are a trouble-free couple. Their monotonous and conventional life takes place in a very large, luxurious, and cold house. One day, they receive furniture from an inheritance from Teresa’s old family home. Teresa, after looking at them, begins to have memories and dreams and to live like a sleepwalker. Meanwhile, her husband discovers who he has married.

Saura’s 1970s cinema is filled with complex dreams, fantasies, memories, and time loops where characters split and meet themselves. Once again, the most conservative Spain could only liberate itself through imagination. Furthermore, for Carlos Saura, childhood is not a lost paradise, and children are not always innocent creatures; rather, childhood is a dark stage full of violence and fear, as also seen in Elisa, vida mía (1977), which is also included in the video installation RESOLUCIÓN: On lifetime decisions in Spanish cinema.
