For this masterclass, we draw inspiration from the Ottoman coat from Dries Van Noten’s Autumn-Winter 2006–07 collection. This design is characterised by its refined, repetitive motifs and the use of gold-coloured metallic thread combined with red sewing thread – creating a rich and layered visual effect.

During the masterclass, we will put these techniques into practice ourselves. We will embroider a tulip motif, combining different materials and textures. We will work with metallic thread, metallic sequins and a metallic ribbon. By bringing these materials together, we will create a rich embroidery that reflects the distinctive style and craftsmanship behind this design.

Kenny Damian is a textile restorer and freelance embroiderer. She has studied various hand embroidery techniques such as aari embroidery, Kutch (India) embroidery, gold and bead embroidery and needlepoint lace. She has learned these techniques and skills directly from embroiderers and through classes at home and abroad. She applies the techniques individually or in combination, and in both contemporary and historic designs.

Because I find it important not only to preserve the objects, but also not to lose the knowledge and the different techniques in which they were made, I started to learn different embroidery techniques.
