The Night of the Hunter (1955, Charles Laughton)

Ben Harper robbed a bank and looted $10,000 killing two people. He hid the money and only he and his children know the location. While Harper is in prison waiting for the noose, a cellmate tries in vain to find out the location of the money. When this cellmate is free, he does everything he can to get the money.

I can only use superlatives to talk about this one. This is my go-to film. The framing and the use of light mean everything to me. I get endless inspiration from it and refer to it often. The visual power of the boat scene is unimaginable. And for me, Robert Mitchum as the preacher man is still the most terrifying character in the history of film.
