MoMu Lectures
De Antwerpse School
This lecture tells the story of Antwerp Fashion. The Antwerp style is often described as a fashion style with a strong feeling for identity and tradition, as a unique balance between realism and creativity. This style was the basis of the international success story of the ‘Antwerp Six’ (Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Marina Yee), Martin Margiela, and the next generations of designers which each added new aspects to the Antwerp identity. All these designers are very different in terms of style and inspiration, but there is one aspect that binds them: their training at the fashion department of the Hogeschool Antwerpen.
Accessories remembered
Clothing rarely looks complete without accessories. They are part of what we wear every day. No wonder, therefore, that the museum's collection contains numerous examples of accessories dating from the 18th to the 20th centuries. What is striking is that accessories are very much related to the era. This lecture focuses on individual items that were once indispensable, but have now completely, or as good as, disappeared. A few examples of these accessories from the ModeMuseum's own collection will be presented during the lecture.
